Creative Writers (DCW) started eighteen years ago as a writing class
for the unemployed. Since then, DCW evolved into a writers'
group, which draws its members from all walks of life united by their
interest in and enthusiasm for writing.
With an active core group of 25 members, DCW meets regularly twice a month in Barlow House, part of the Droichead Arts Centre. Some meetings feature a specific talk or topic of discussion, others are more informal, but all include ample time for the lifeblood of the group: members reading their work, sharing it for praise and helpful comment under the supportive umbrella of fellow writers who rapidly become friends. The craic is good too! New members are always welcome. We find we learn a lot from one another and our own work develops positively, with helpful tips on different aspects of the writing art and business from more experienced members. Occassional open sessions provide a chance to read work in front of an audience and special workshops and seminars an opportunity for more formal learning. The DCW has published two anthologies of local writing, Drogheda Writes and Drogheda Writes 2 and is the organiser of the Amergin Creative Writing Awards. Meetings take place at 8 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Barlow House. Everyone is welcome. Come along, and if you wish, bring a piece of your writing to read aloud. Whether you write poetry, short fiction, humour, memoir, novels, or non-fiction this is the place for you. There is a €3 contribution.
